BAKER   --     I am currently doing research on Seth BAKER and Ada (DEMAREST) [There are many variations in the spelling of Demarest: DEMAREST, DEMOREST, DEMEREST, DEMAREE & about 8 others.] who came to Broome County from Dutchess County around 1840. Ada is the daughter of David DEMEREE & Phoebe AUSTIN. Seth BAKER (b. abt 1789 in NY) and Ada DEMAREST (b. abt 1791 in Dutchess Co., NY) lived on the Plains near Centre Village in Colesville. Their children include: Warren BAKER, b. 1822 in NY (md. Artemecia D. of Vermont); David BAKER, b. 1826 in NY; Phebe BAKER, b. 1828 in NY (didn't marry); Erastus Darias BAKER, b. 1831 in NY (#1 md. a Miss Hall? #2 Jane Louden CHRISTY); Seth BAKER, b. 1834 (md. Emily R. BOON of Indiana); Mary BAKER (md. John WEEKS); Esther BAKER (md. Franklin PUTNAM); Eliza BAKER; and Smith BAKER . The children are not necessarily in birth order. I know very little about the last few children listed. They are most likely older than the otheres. The DEMAREST line goes all the way back to Palestine, and hooks into nobility, at least. I am working mostly on the BAKER line but can point others in the direction of the DEMAREST line. Any information on descendants, ancestors, service in wars, stories or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

BARNES   --     Looking for members of HOLMES or BARNES families of Broome County (Barker). 1850 Barker census shows Samuel HOLMES, 37 married to a Harriet (BARNES?) HOLMES, 29, with children: Sarah(2), Emeline(4), Henry(13) and William(11). Next door, in the Jacob HAYES household, live William J. HOLMES(11) and Emeline BARNES(26). Kind of a strange arrangement, but I think I am on the right track. Any information on these two families would be greatly appreciated.

BAXTER   --     I am looking for information on the family of Stephen BAXTER. He shows up in Conklin on the 1825 census, 1830, and 1835 census. I believe he was in Chenango County in Oxford in 1820. I am trying to determine if he married Hannah PADGETT BAXTER of Oxford, Chenango Co. between 1837-1840. Stephen's first wife died between the 1830 and 1835. Hannah's first husband Augustus BAXTER died in Conklin on 27 Dec 1837 according to court documents in Norwich. Augustus' residence was listed as Oxford. I am trying to find out if Stephen and Augustus were related and if Stephen and Hannah were married. Any help on this remarkably confusing family would be very helpful.

BEAVAN   --     I am currently researching the Beavan family who arrived in the Broome County area (Windsor) circa 1844-1846. I have info on the family which I got from my Grandfather and the Windsor cemetary. However, most of my information deals with my gr grandfather, Edward D. Beavan. There are 2 brothers lines I have lost contact with: James and Steve. James C. Beavan who was born in 1854 and married Ada R. ?. They had children James F., Nellie M., and Leon C. Beavan. Steve also had a family, but that is all I know.

Grandfather who not only had my G. Grandfather Thomas A. Beavan, but also Eddie Beavan. Eddie fathered Legrand Beavan who eventually moved to Susquehanna, PA and subsequently aquired a great deal of wealth. He died in 1990 and last report his estate is still not settled. His brother Ivan lives in Bakersfield, CA. Another descendant of the family lives in Georgia and his name is Elton Beavan and is the brother to the late Albert Beavan who lived in Binghamton before his death.

BIGSBY   --     My g g grandmother's name is Mary Bigsby. The only thing I know about her is a passage from a news article concerning one of her sons. It states in part,..."His father, Alfred Wood, was born in Fishkill-on-the-Hudson (NY). He came to Wayne Co. (PA), by way of Binghamton (NY), where he met and married Miss Mary Bigsby."

It is sad but that is all that I know about her. In the census of 1830, there were no Bigsbys listed. I guess that she was born around 1815. The only clue so far was that in the Chenango Co. census of 1830, there was a Peter Bigsby listed with a daughter, aged 5 to 10.

BINGHAM   --     I am looking for any information on early BINGHAM's. My great-grandfather, William Thomas BREEDLOVE, published an autobiography in the late 1800's. Although born in Montgomery County Alabama, he mentioned that his mother, Mary Elizabeth BINGHAM BREEDLOVE had ancestors who came from England and founded the town of Bingham (must be Binghamton?) NY. Said "that one great uncle lived to be 107 and was honored in the town that bore his name." Made no mention of where his parents were born, but didn't sound as if his wife was actually from NY, but if her great-uncle had lived there all his life, she couldn't have been more than two generations removed. William Thomas Breedlove was born in 1848, so Mary Elizabeth BINGHAM his mother could have been born 1800-1830. That would probably place a great-uncle's birthdate in the mid range of 1700. Would appreciate any history on the area which might mention early BINGHAMs. Thanks so much!
