CARPENTER   --     Looking for info re Isaac CARPENTER (born c. 1785) and Phoebe PINE CARPENTER, husband and wife, who migrated to Broome Co. from the Town of Tompkins, Delaware County. Little is known of Isaac and Phoebe except that they had a son, Benjamin CARPENTER, in Broome Co. abt. 1815. Phoebe PINE was the GRAND-DAUGHTER of Philip PINE, soldier of the Revolution, and the DAUGHTER of Philip's son, Daniel PINE. In 1791, Philip became only the second settler of Deposit, NY. Records in the Broome Co. Clerk's office indicate that an Isaac CARPENTER and George CARPENTER, both of the Town of Tompkins, Delaware Co., bought property in Broome Co. in 1806, and sold it in 1813 to a Samuel REXFORD. The records also show that an Isaac CARPENTER and wife, Betsey CARPENTER, sold property to an Aaron HIGGENDORN in 1831. The records of the First Presbyterian Church of Binghamton show that: (a) an Issac CARPENTER was baptized into the church in 1830; (b)a Betsey Walker CARPENTER was simultaneously admitted into the church with a letter of reference; and (c) a child of Isaac and Betsey named Mary was baptized in 1831. I am assuming that Betsey was Isaac's second wife. I am attempting to obtain documentary evidence that Phoebe PINE was the wife of Isaac CARPENTER and the mother of Benjamin CARPENTER. Would be interested in ANY information concerning any members of the CARPENTER or PINE families in Broome Co.

CHURCH   --     I am looking for information on my great great great grandfather, FRANKLIN HIRAM CHURCH. He was born in Broome County, New York in 1825. His parents were ELISHA AND RHODA. He married Hanna Waters in 1852 in New York.. He resided there until he was 29 years of age. (This would make the year he moved out west 1854.) He came to Dixon, IL in 1854 and engaged in a store as clerk, in which position he continued for 8 months, and afterward engaged at various pursuits during his residence of 2 years in Dixon. In 1856 he came to Marion township and bought land in Section 2, where he has since that time resided. Mr. Church wasa married in 1852, to Miss Hanna Waters, also a native of New York. (This marriage happened before he came west, so he must have been married in New York and then from there decided to move out west!) Any information on ELISHA & RHODA CHURCH or FRANKLIN HIRAM CHURCH would be greatly appreciated

COMSTOCK   --     Can anyone help me with Enoch SMITH who married Eunice COMSTOCK. *The History and Genealogy of The Comstock Family in America* gives Eunice' brother as Truman Comstock who died at Windsor, Broome County NY. My question is this: did Enoch and Eunice have a son named Truman Comstock Smith. My ancestor by that name (Truman Comstock Smith) was born 1807 in Broome County NY. Was he named after his mother's brother Truman Comstock?

Interestingly, the Comstock book calls (Enoch) Smith *of Cincinnati.* That Cincinnati part seems almost incredible, but who knows. (Incredible in that it would have been so far out west for those days.) At any rate, my theory is that Eunice Comstock and Enoch Smith were the parents of my Truman Comstock Smith, named after Eunice' brother.

Whether Enoch and Eunice were his parents I am not absolutely certain. However, what I definitely know is that Truman Comstock SMITH was born 29 Jan 1807 in Broome County, New York He was married in Broome County (Jul 1831) to Hannah Henrietta CONRAD (born: 7 Jul 1814 in New York). A year after they were married, Truman and Henrietta took their baby daughter Harriet and moved from Broome County NY, to Ashtabula County OH, later to St. Clair County MI, and their family grew. Finally some of them moved on to Iowa, homesteading around northeastern IA towns of Chester, Lime Springs, Cresco, Decorah, and Forest City Township. (that vicinity!)

Does anyone recognize these Broome County people? I'd love to share and compare with anyone on these pioneering Smiths and Comstocks and Conrads.

COOK   --     Caldwell/Colwell COOK was born 1747-1768 probably in Massachusetts or Connecticut. He served as a private in the 29th Regimental Infantry [from NY? CT? MA?] during the American Revolution. After the War he married Sarah WHITNEY [b. NY abt 1783?, d. Lorain Co, OH] daughter of General William WHITNEY and Ruth RODMAN. Caldwell/Colwell COOK died in Chenango Twp, Broome Co, NY in June, 1814. Their children:

  • William Whitney COOK b. 1811 in PA or Broome Co, d. 1894 Lorain Co, OH; m. Maria DURFEE, daughter of Wing DURFEE [of Madison Co, NY? Broome Co?].
  • Mary COOK, b. abt. 1813 probably in Broome County.
I've been unable to go anywhere with this Caldwell/Colwell COOK because I need to know where he was born. I was hoping his military records would tell me, but the Federal war rolls do not show the 29th Regiment for any state, therefore it must have been a militia unit.

Does anyone recognize the above given names or even the military unit? Would appreciate any and all help on this one.
