SEARLES   --     I am trying to find the parents of Abraham SEARLES who according to the 1865 state census was born in Delaware Co. Abraham is in Broome Co in 1850 census married to a Julia Ann. I believe this is Julia Ann SMITH for many reason [over 25 year of research] the daughter of Zenus SMITH and his wife Leafe. Julia Ann in 1853 and is buried in Broome Co. Abraham's second wife is Emily HARPER Merritt the widow of Joseph M Merritt. Emily is listed on the 1865 census as being born in Delaware Co. I have no clues as to where in Delaware Co. There is another Abraham H SEARLES in the same general area [Broome, Chenango] that gets tossed into the mess just for spice. I think it may be by Abraham's nephew. Any help to find where Abraham comes from would be terrific. Also I am trying to figure out which Abraham H is a Justice of the Peace in Broome Co. I found him signing a document for a relative on the other side of the family by accident. I have looked at the records listing the appintment of J of P and he must be in the missing years. I would love to find a marriage record for Abraham and Julia Ann. Maybe then I would have the proof of the Zenus SMITH connection. It is a gotta be, just no proof YET. Thank you, Linda

SMITH   --     Can anyone help me with Enoch SMITH who married Eunice COMSTOCK. *The History and Genealogy of The Comstock Family in America* gives Eunice' brother as Truman Comstock who died at Windsor, Broome County NY. My question is this: did Enoch and Eunice have a son named Truman Comstock Smith. My ancestor by that name (Truman Comstock Smith) was born 1807 in Broome County NY. Was he named after his mother's brother Truman Comstock?

Interestingly, the Comstock book calls (Enoch) Smith *of Cincinnati.* That Cincinnati part seems almost incredible, but who knows. (Incredible in that it would have been so far out west for those days.) At any rate, my theory is that Eunice Comstock and Enoch Smith were the parents of my Truman Comstock Smith, named after Eunice' brother.

Whether Enoch and Eunice were his parents I am not absolutely certain. However, what I definitely know is that Truman Comstock SMITH was born 29 Jan 1807 in Broome County, New York He was married in Broome County (Jul 1831) to Hannah Henrietta CONRAD (born: 7 Jul 1814 in New York). A year after they were married, Truman and Henrietta took their baby daughter Harriet and moved from Broome County NY, to Ashtabula County OH, later to St. Clair County MI, and their family grew. Finally some of them moved on to Iowa, homesteading around northeastern IA towns of Chester, Lime Springs, Cresco, Decorah, and Forest City Township. (that vicinity!)

Does anyone recognize these Broome County people? I'd love to share and compare with anyone on these pioneering Smiths and Comstocks and Conrads.

SNICALE   --     I am trying to locate surname SNICALE in the Binghamton, Broome County, NY area. My father John Justin Snicale was born and raised in Binghamton on May 2nd, 1922. His mother was Frances Mary Snicale. She had 2 sisters, Nora Elizabeth Snicale and Emily Snicale (she went by Emily, but this may not have been her first name - possibly her middle). I have not been able to come up with any thing accept a Gerald Snicale (he lived in New York State at some time) that died in New Jersey in the late 1960's, I'm not sure if he is related but he is the only other person I have found with that surname other than by brothers and father.

SWARTWOOD - TRUESDALE   --     Does anyone have information on a Kate Truesdale who married James Swartwood ca 1859? They had a daughter Harriet (Hattie) ca 1860-1861. Who were Kate Truesdale's parents? When did she leave Broome Co NY and move to WI? When and where in Wisconsin did she die?

James Swartwood was married to Kate before he enlisted in the Civil War in Sept 1861. He served the entire time in the war and was mustered out in April 1865 from a hospital in NY due to a cannon injury (arm was amputated). As far as I can tell, James Swartwood never was in Wisconsin. He recuperated in NY from his arm amputation. I am guessing that Kate left Broome Co with their daughter 1861-1865 while James was serving in the war. In his pension application he states his first wife died "somewhere in Wisconsin" -- sounds like she left him and he did not know where she went, but knew that she had died.

As a widower, James Swartwood married 16 March 1869 Maria HILL and started a second family. Would appreciate any help with info on his first wife Kate. Who was she, and what happened to her?
